Top ten troubleshooting tips

  1. Please request technical support Techies by calling 440-775-0556 or emailing mbuck@oberlin.net.

  2. Rebooting is the silver bullet of computer repair. Reboot your computer at least three times before seeking help.

  3. Can you isolate the problem? For example, if a document does not print correctly, can you print another document? If so, you have isolated the problem to the specific document file (as opposed to a printer or computer problem).

  4. Is the problem widespread or localized? For example, if you are unable to access the internet, try using another computer. Ask around to see if others in your building are experiencing the same problem.

  5. Be sure you are logged into the network. Reboot the computer. Can you see other computers on your network? If not, your computer does not "see" the network. In that case, many server-based applications will not function

  6. Check and recheck your basic connections they somehow come loose of their own accord. The computer and the monitor must have power. The monitor, keyboard, and mouse must be attached to the computer. Your computer must be physically attached to the network with a network cable.

  7. Fatal exception errors and illegal operations are not unusual, especially when you have two or more applications open simultaneously. An occasional fatal error is routine just reboot. If your computer is totally locked up, turn the power off, then restart the computer.

  8. Be prepared to have your computer "ghosted" anytime. When a hardware or software problem can not be resolved, a technician will reinstall the original software configuration and in the process wipe out all data on your hard drive. That is why saving your files on the network is so important. (The process is called ghosting after the software used: Ghost.)

  9. Most printer problems are caused by bad paper. Use good paper. Fan and stack paper neatly before inserting it.

  10. Reboot your computer at lunch time. Rebooting clears out the clutter in your computer's memory that causes illegal operations, fatal exceptions errors, and other glitches.
